LSB 500: Creator Spirit, by Whose Aid

Our Lord Makes Us His Holy People and Seals Us with His Spirit

At Mt. Sinai “Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God” (Ex. 19:2–3). Through Moses God gave the Law and sealed His covenant through sacrifice. The Lord made Israel His “treasured possession among all peoples” as well as “a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Ex. 19:5–6), if they would listen to His voice and do what He had spoken. In these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, who has come down to us and gone up to God by the way of His death and resurrection. He has fulfilled the Law and poured out His own blood as the New Covenant. Therefore, “that the Father may be glorified in the Son,” He will do whatever we ask in His Name (John 14:13–14). He gives “another Helper… even the Spirit of truth” to be with us forever (John 14:16). The Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us “with groanings too deep for words” (Rom. 8:26). Now we pray with confidence as we eagerly await “the revealing of the sons of God” (Rom. 8:19).

PENTECOST DAY

(04 June 2017)

Numbers 11:24–30; Ps. 25:1-15; Acts 2:1–21; John 7:37–39

LSB 497: Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord

The Risen Lord Jesus Pours Out the Holy Spirit

The Lord took “some of the Spirit” that was on Moses “and put it on the seventy elders” of Israel (Num. 11:25), and they “prophesied in the camp” (Num. 11:26). In the same way, our risen Lord Jesus poured out His Holy Spirit at the Feast of Pentecost—the fiftieth day and the “Eighth Sunday” of Easter. When “a sound like a mighty rushing wind” and “tongues as of fire appeared” and rested on each of the twelve Apostles, “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” and proclaimed “the mighty works of God” (Acts 2:2–4, 11). The Lord Jesus grants this same Spirit to His Church on earth to proclaim Him glorified on the cross and risen victorious from the grave for us sinners. From His open heart, our crucified and risen Lord pours out His Holy Spirit in “rivers of living water” (John 7:38) and invites everyone who thirsts to come to Him and drink freely (John 7:37). Through this life-giving work of the Holy Spirit, we hear our pastors “telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God” (Acts 2:11) and “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).

Acts 2:1–21 (SBLGNT)

7 ἐξίσταντο ⸀δὲ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ⸀λέγοντες· ⸀Οὐχ ἰδοὺ ⸀πάντες οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ λαλοῦντες Γαλιλαῖοι;

8 καὶ πῶς ἡμεῖς ἀκούομεν ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ ἡμῶν ἐν ᾗ ἐγεννήθημεν;

12 ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ ⸀διηπόρουν, ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες· Τί ⸀θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι;

Literal Translation

(1)  And in the fulfilling of the day of Pentecost, they were all with one mind in the same place.

(2)  And suddenly a sound came out of the heaven, as being borne along by a violent wind! And it filled all the house where they were sitting.

(3)  And tongues as of fire appeared to them, being distributed, and it sat on each one of them.

(4)  And they were all filled of the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave ability to them to speak.

(5)  And Jews were living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation of those under the heaven.

(6)  But this sound occurring, the multitude came together and were confounded, because they each heard them speaking in his own dialect.

(7)  And all were amazed and marveled, saying to one another, Behold, are not all these, those speaking, Galileans?

(8)  And how do we hear each in our own dialect in which we were born,

(9)  Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and those living in Mesopotamia, both Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

(10)  both Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the regions of Libya over against Cyrene, and the temporarily residing Romans, both Jews and proselytes,

(11)  Cretans and Arabians; in our own languages we hear them speaking the great deeds of God?

(12)  And all were amazed and puzzled, saying to one another, What would this wish to be?

(13)  But ridiculing, others said, They are full of sweet wine.

(14)  But standing up with the Eleven, Peter lifted up his voice and spoke out to them, Men, Jews, and all those living in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words:

(15)  For these are not drunk, as you imagine, for it is the third hour of the day.

(16)  But this is that which has been spoken by the prophet Joel,

(17)  "And it shall be" in the last days, God says, "I will pour from My Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy;" "and your young men shall see visions," "and your old men shall dream dreams;"

(18)  "and also I will pour out My Spirit on My slaves and slave women in those days," and they shall prophesy.

(19)  "And I will give wonders in the heaven above," and miraculous signs "on the earth below, blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

(20)  The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the" "coming of the great and glorious" "day of the Lord."

(21)  "And it shall be that everyone who shall call on the name of the Lord will be saved." Joel 2:28-32
