When the people of Israel wept, complaining that they had no meat to eat (Num. 11:4), Moses cried out to the Lord that “the burden of all this people” was too heavy for him and that he was “not able to carry all this people alone” (Num. 11:11–14). So the Lord had Moses gather “seventy men of the elders of Israel” (Num. 11:16), and the Lord “took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders” (Num. 11:25), so that Moses would not carry the burden alone. All who thus labor are honored, and all the people are cared for, in the name of the Lord (Mark 9:39–41). Everything is done with reference to Christ Jesus. So we cling to Him, and we flee from all sins that would separate us from Him (Mark 9:42–48). The life of the Church is one of repentant faith in Christ. Christians confess their sins to one another, and they “pray for one another,” that each would be raised up and healed by the Lord Jesus, who covers “a multitude of sins” and saves our souls from death (James 5:15–20).

There are so many transitions going on right now that Greek Tuesday is very late…but it IS here! In our Mark 9:38-50 text for today, the disciples still don’t get that Jesus is going to die. And now things get a bit confusing and context really matters to understand what is going on here!

42 Καὶ ὃς ⸀ἂν σκανδαλίσῃ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν ⸀τούτων τῶν πιστευόντων ⸂εἰς ἐμέ⸃, καλόν ἐστιν αὐτῷ μᾶλλον εἰ περίκειται ⸂μύλος ὀνικὸς⸃ περὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ καὶ βέβληται εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν.
43 Καὶ ἐὰν ⸀σκανδαλίζῃ σε ἡ χείρ σου, ἀπόκοψον αὐτήν· καλόν ⸂ἐστίν σε⸃ κυλλὸν ⸂εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ζωὴν⸃ ἢ τὰς δύο χεῖρας ἔχοντα ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὴν γέενναν, εἰς τὸ πῦρ τὸ ⸀ἄσβεστον.
45 καὶ ἐὰν ὁ πούς σου σκανδαλίζῃ σε, ἀπόκοψον αὐτόν· καλόν ἐστίν ⸀σε εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ζωὴν χωλὸν ἢ τοὺς δύο πόδας ἔχοντα βληθῆναι εἰς τὴν ⸀γέενναν.
47 καὶ ἐὰν ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου σκανδαλίζῃ σε, ἔκβαλε αὐτόν· καλόν ⸀σέ ἐστιν μονόφθαλμον εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ ἢ δύο ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντα βληθῆναι εἰς ⸀τὴν ⸀γέενναν,
48 ὅπου ὁ σκώληξ αὐτῶν οὐ τελευτᾷ καὶ τὸ πῦρ οὐ σβέννυται.
49 Πᾶς γὰρ πυρὶ ⸀ἁλισθήσεται.
50 καλὸν τὸ ἅλας· ἐὰν δὲ τὸ ἅλας ἄναλον γένηται, ἐν τίνι αὐτὸ ἀρτύσετε; ἔχετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ⸀ἅλα, καὶ εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἀλλήλοις.
(38) And John answered Him, saying, Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, who does not follow us. And we forbade him, because he does not follow us.
(39) But Jesus said, Do not forbid him. For there is no one who shall do a work of power in My name, yet be able to speak evil of Me quickly.
(40) For who is not against us is for us.
(41) For whoever gives you a cup of cold water to drink in My name, because you are of Christ, truly I say to you, In no way he will lose his reward.
(42) And whoever causes one of these little ones that believe in Me to offend, it is good for him if rather a millstone be laid about his neck, and he be thrown into the sea.
(43) And if your hand offend you, cut it off. For it is profitable for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go away into Hell, into the unquenchable fire,
(44) where their worm does not die, and the fire is not put out.
(45) And if your foot causes you to offend, cut it off, for it is profitable for you to enter into life lame, than having two feet to be thrown into Hell, into the unquenchable fire,
(46) where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.
(47) And if your eye offends you, cast it out. For it is profitable for you to enter into the kingdom of God one-eyed, than having two eyes to be thrown into the Hell of fire,
(48) "where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched."
(49) For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be salted with salt.
(50) Salt is good, but if the salt becomes saltless, by what will you season? Have salt in yourselves and be at peace with one another.
