The Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ Brings True Rejoicing, Even under the Cross

Sometimes life requires the astonishing patience of Job. Like him, we are to rejoice in the midst of affliction, be grounded in repentance under the cross of Christ, hope relentlessly in His resurrection, that we might see “the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful” (James 5:11). In the promise of the Gospel, therefore, “be patient” and “establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand” (James 5:7, 8). Like St. John, the Baptist, whatever your own kind of prison or suffering may be, call upon Jesus and receive the strength of His Word from those He sends to you. For as “the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up,” so is the good news of Jesus preached to you, also (Matt. 11:5). He comes and restores the fortunes of Zion, His holy Church, so that “sorrow and sighing shall flee away” (Is. 35:10).

11 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐκ ἐγήγερται ἐν γεννητοῖς γυναικῶν μείζων Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ· ὁ δὲ μικρότερος ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ τῶν οὐρανῶν μείζων αὐτοῦ ἐστιν.

12 ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν ἡμερῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ ἕως ἄρτι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν βιάζεται, καὶ βιασταὶ ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν.

13 πάντες γὰρ οἱ προφῆται καὶ ὁ νόμος ἕως Ἰωάννου ἐπροφήτευσαν·

14 καὶ εἰ θέλετε δέξασθαι, αὐτός ἐστιν Ἠλίας ὁ μέλλων ἔρχεσθαι.

15 ὁ ἔχων ὦτα ἀκουέτω.


Literal Translation

2  But hearing in the prison of the works of Christ, sending two of his disciples,

3  John said to Him, Are You the One coming, or are we to look for another?

4  And answering, Jesus said to them, Going, relate to John what you hear and see:

5  The blind receive sight, and the lame walk; lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear; the dead are raised, and the poor are given the gospel.

6  And blessed is the one, whoever shall not be offended in Me.

7  But as these were going, Jesus began to say to the crowds about John, What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? A reed being shaken with the wind?

8  But what did you go out to see? A man being clothed in soft garments? Behold, those wearing soft things are in the houses of kings.

9  But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one more excellent than a prophet.

10  For this is the one about whom it has been written: "Behold, I send out My messenger before Your face, who shall prepare Your way before You."

11  Truly I say to you, There has not arisen among those born of a woman any greater than John the Baptist. But the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is.

12  But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of Heaven suffers violence, and the violent seize it.

13  For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

14  And if you are willing to receive, he is Elijah, the one going to come.

15  The one having ears to hear, let him hear.

By the Preaching of Repentance, We Are Prepared for the Coming of the Lord

John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ‘Repent’” (Matt. 3:1–2). His preaching of repentance for the forgiveness of sins prepared people for the coming of Christ into the world. St. John’s work was historically complete with the incarnate Advent of Jesus; but his vital ministry continues in preaching Law and Gospel. The Son of God has come in the flesh, “a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots” (Is. 11:1), and continues to bear the fruits of righteousness. His good tree of the cross is “a signal for the peoples” (Is. 11:10), by which He calls the nations to repentance. “With the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips” (Is. 11:4), He slays the wicked and brings the dead to life, making sons of Abraham out of lifeless stones. So also the “root of Jesse” comes to us, “even he who arises to rule the Gentiles” (Rom. 15:12), that “we might have hope” and be filled “with all joy and peace in believing” (Rom. 15:4, 13).

10  But already the axe is even laid at the root of the trees; therefore, any tree not bringing forth good fruit is cut off and is thrown into fire.

11  I indeed baptize you in water to repentance; but He who is coming after me is stronger than me, of whom I am not able to lift The sandals. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,

12  whose fan is in His hand, and He will cleanse His floor and will gather His wheat into the storehouse. But He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

The Lord Comes in Meekness and Humility to Save Us Now

The Lord Jesus enters Jerusalem “humble, and mounted on a donkey,” riding on “a beast of burden” (Matt. 21:5), as He Himself bears the sins of the world in His body. Now He comes by the Ministry of the Gospel to save us from sin, death, the devil, and hell. Therefore, we sing, “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matt. 21:9). For we are called “to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob,” His holy Church, “that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths” (Is. 2:3). By His Word, we “walk in the light of the Lord” (Is. 2:5). That is to live in love, which “does no wrong to a neighbor” (Rom. 13:10). We “cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light,” for “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed” (Rom. 13:11, 12). Hence, the entire Christian life is a time to wake and watch, “for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming” (Matt. 24:42).

3  And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord has need of them. And he will send them at once.

4  But all this happened that might be fulfilled that spoken by the prophet, saying:

5  "Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King comes to you, meek and mounted on an ass, even a colt, the son of an ass."

6  And the disciples, having gone and having done as Jesus ordered them,

39  And they did not know until the flood came and took all away. So also will be the coming of the Son of Man.

40  At that time two will be out in the field; the one is taken away, and the one is left;

41  two grinding at the mill; one is taken away, and one is left.

42  Watch, then, for you do not know in what hour your Lord comes.

43  But know this, that if the housemaster had known in what watch the thief comes, he would have watched and not have allowed his house to be dug through.

44  Because of this, you also be ready, for in that hour you think not, the Son of Man comes.

We Praise God for Sustaining Life in and through His Word

The nation resounds with thanksgiving for the earth’s bountiful harvest, crops of wheat and grains, all beneath the canopy of God’s almighty care. But “man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deut. 8:1–10). The Church is the vessel through which the Word of God penetrates the world with its Law and Gospel. It is this divine Word which proclaims Jesus as the sole source of life, health, and wholeness. It is Jesus who heals lepers with His Word, “Go show yourselves to the priests” (Luke 17:11–19). Of the ten cleansed, only one expresses thanksgiving back to Jesus. But true gratitude proceeds from a heart sustained by faith. Jesus bids this one Samaritan to “rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.” So also, we are sent from the Divine Service, bolstered in our faith by Baptismal and Eucharist blessing to be thankful in our circumstances of plenty and hunger, abundance and need (Phil. 4:6–20).

11  And it happened in His going to Jerusalem even He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

14  And seeing them, He said to them, Going, show yourselves to the priests. And it happened in their going they were cleansed.

15  And one of them, seeing that he was cured, returned glorifying God with a loud voice.

Jesus Christ Reigns Enduring the Cross—Its Scorn and Shame

The Lord Jesus reigns in love among those who are baptized in His name. “They shall be mine,” He says, “and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him” (Mal. 3:17). Jesus’ service through crucifixion for sinful men anchors us in new life. In the proclamation of His Son, God makes His justice clear defining “the distinction between the righteous and the wicked” (Mal. 3:18). He truly is “the King of the Jews” (Luke 23:38), who governs His Church with all authority in heaven and on earth. He has come into His Kingdom by His cross, and He graciously remembers us in Paradise. Therefore, do not weep for Him, but with repentant faith “weep for yourselves and for your children” (Luke 23:28). Then the mountains and hills of Jerusalem, His holy Church, shall cover you with His righteousness and peace. For He “is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Col. 1:15). “All things were created through him and for him” (Col. 1:16), and “all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” bodily in Him, reconciling all things to Himself “by the blood of His cross” (Col. 1:19–20).

(26) And as they led Him away, having laid hold on a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from a field, they put the cross on him, to bear it behind Jesus.

(27) And a great multitude of people were following Him, and of women who also were bewailing and lamenting Him.

(28) And turning to them, Jesus said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep over Me, but weep over yourselves and over your children.

(29) For behold, days will come in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that did not bear, and breasts that did not suckle.

(30) "Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us! And to the hills, Cover us!"

(31) For if they do these things in the green tree, what may take place in the dry?

(32) And two others, two criminals, were led with Him to be put to death.

(34) And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. And dividing His garments, they cast a lot.

God’s Plan of Redemption Trumps Earthly Destruction and Violence

There are signs of the Lord’s coming all around: the cross that marks His Church, the violence and death of the sinful world, and the shaking of the natural order. “There will be great distress upon the earth” (Luke 21:23), but the faithful know that “the kingdom of God is near” (Luke 21:31). Therefore, “straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:28). Be awake and alert, and heed the words of Christ, which “will not pass away” (Luke 21:33). For you “the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings” (Mal. 4:2). He sends His preachers of repentance in the spirit and power of Elijah “before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes” (Mal. 4:5), in order to “direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ” (2 Thess. 3:5). Although you are often faithless, “the Lord is faithful,” and by the preaching of His Word “He will establish you and guard you against the evil one” (2 Thess. 3:3). Therefore, “do not grow weary in doing good” (2 Thess. 3:13). In the midst of calamity, believe upon the Lord, Jesus Christ.

(5)  And as some were speaking about the temple, that it had been adorned with beautiful stones and gifts, He said,

(6)  As to these things that you see, days will come in which a stone will not be left on a stone, which will not be thrown down.

(7)  And they asked Him, saying, Teacher, then when will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things are about to happen?

(8)  And He said, Watch that you not be led astray. For many will come on My name, saying, I AM! Also, The time has come! Do not go after them.

(9)  And when you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be afraid. For these things must first occur, but the end is not at once.

(10)  Then He said to them, Nation will be lifted up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

(11)  Also there will be great earthquakes from place to place, and famines, and plagues. And also there will be terrors and great signs from Heaven.

(12)  But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you, and will persecute you, delivering you into the synagogues and prisons, being led away before kings and governors on account of My name.

(13)  But it will return to you for a testimony.

(14)  Then put into your hearts not to premeditate to make a defense.

(15)  For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all those opposing you will not be able to withstand or contradict.

(16)  But you will be betrayed also by parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends. And they will put some of you to death.

(17)  And you will be hated by all because of My name.

(18)  And a hair of your head shall in no way perish.

(19)  By your patience you will gain your souls.

(20)  And when you see Jerusalem being encircled by armies, then recognize that its destruction has come near.

(21)  Then let those in Judea flee into the mountains; and those in its midst, let them go out. And those in the open spaces, let them not go into her.

(22)  For these are days of vengeance when all things that have been written are to be fulfilled.

(23)  But woe to the pregnant women, and the ones suckling in those days; for great distress will be on the earth and wrath on this people.

(24)  And they will fall by the mouth of the sword and will be led captive to all the nations. And Jerusalem will be trodden down by nations, until the times of the nations are fulfilled.

(25)  And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars. And on the earth will be anxiety of nations with bewilderment, roaring of sea and of surf,

(26)  men fainting from fear, and expectation of the things coming on the earth. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

(27)  And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and much glory.

(28)  But these things beginning to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.


All Saints' Day and the Word SAINT

What makes a saint a saint? Not their works or doing some miracles. A saint is a holy one, one who has faith in Jesus, who has been born from above in Baptism. All Saints' Day is the annual remembrance of those who have died in Christ. They are examples for us of faithful living, and encourage us to serve our neighbors with the love we have received from God.
